To clean a glass pipe, soak it in 91% isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt for 30 minutes to several hours, then shake to break up resin and rinse with hot (not boiling) water. Here’s the full step-by-step:
- Place the glass pipe in a sealable plastic bag or jar.
- Pour in enough 91% isopropyl alcohol to fully submerge the pipe.
- Add 1–2 tablespoons of coarse salt (kosher or rock salt) — it acts as an abrasive.
- Seal and shake gently for 1–2 minutes, then let it soak for at least 30 minutes (overnight for heavy buildup).
- Shake again, then use a pipe cleaner or cotton swab to scrub any stuck residue.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water — never go straight from cold to boiling, as thermal shock can crack the glass.
- Air dry completely before using.

To use a glass pipe, grind your dry tobacco or herb to a medium-fine consistency, pack the bowl lightly so air can still flow through, then light and inhale. Here’s how to do it properly:
- Grind your material — too chunky and it won’t burn evenly; too fine and it’ll pull through the hole.
- Pack the bowl about three-quarters full, keeping it loose at the bottom and slightly firmer on top.
- Cover the carb hole (the small hole on the side of the bowl) with your finger if your pipe has one.
- Hold the pipe by the stem, bring the flame to the edge of the bowl, and inhale slowly to draw the ember across the surface.
- Release the carb hole partway through your draw to clear the chamber.
- Tap out the ash between sessions and store the pipe in a clean, dry spot.
